"I hated poverty. Poverty is more of a choice than anything else, and I can change that (poverty). It depends upon how hard I want to work, and I decided that I could change it." -Dr. Ben Carson

What I see a lot is that when people are poor they convince themselves they're not because they're embarrassed about it. Especially minorities like to say oh well at least I'm living or at least you have a roof over your head. Basic shelter, income, health, safety, etc is something a lot of people work hard for even if it's basic. Poverty is temporary if you work hard to change your situation. Sometimes things don't work out for you but if you work towards doing new things and getting rid of old habits and plainly educating yourself you are headed to a new quality of life. I feel that things are more distracting when you are living in a bad situation and when you resist those urges to just do nothing and make yourself dumber you are choosing to remain in your bad situation. Sometimes people get stuck in the cycle but there really isn't a need to follow it. It's just a false pretense. There is more to education and life than what is currently available right now.
